This project transforms two independent ground-floor commercial units into a single hair salon with a clear and unified identity, while working within the constraints imposed by the existing building. Originally occupied by different businesses, the two commercial units shared a similar layout and basement level with independent service areas. In addition, the main staircase serving the residential apartments above occupies a central position within the floor plan and had to remain untouched.

The project is organised around a timber-framed structure that brings together the salon’s service areas and functions. Constructed to conceal the accesses to the existing spiral staircases, it encloses the washing area, defines the service areas behind, and incorporates storage, wardrobes and display niches. Detached from the ceiling, the structure remains visually lightweight, preserving the perception of the existing space while allowing the styling area to remain open and uncluttered.

A continuous fluted cladding wraps the timber-framed structure, the reception desk and the perimeter walls, establishing a single architectural language throughout the salon. Extending seamlessly across the different architectural elements, it conceals doors, integrates storage and forms a continuous backdrop to the styling stations, reinforcing the perception of a single, cohesive interior.

The styling area combines two complementary types of workstations. Five freestanding styling stations occupy the central open area, allowing clear circulation around them and maintaining visual connections across the salon. Three additional stations are integrated along the perimeter, where the continuous fluted cladding forms a consistent architectural backdrop and reinforces the continuity of the interior.

Along the street façade, a linear bespoke bench responds to the client’s wish to display professional haircare products. Conceived as both seating and retail display, it creates a continuous interface with the shopfront while integrating seating, product display and storage into a single architectural element.

Natural light from the large street-facing windows extends deep into the interior, reinforcing the sense of openness across the unified floor plan. A restrained palette of light colours, warm oak surfaces and integrated lighting emphasises the continuity of the space.
