Apartment Renovation in Petralona, Athens

The project concerns the renovation of a 1960s apartment in the center of Athens, which stands out for the mosaic floors that defined its character: red in the entrance, black in the living and dining rooms, white in the kitchen and storage room, orange in the bedrooms, and green in the bathroom.

Originally, the apartment included a kitchen with two entrances, a poorly lit living room, a dining room separated from the kitchen, and an oversized bathroom.

The main objectives of the renovation were to enhance natural light in the living areas, establish a more functional and cohesive layout, and preserve the original mosaic floors, ensuring continuity of material character while accommodating the new program.

Large portions of the interior walls were removed to create an open-plan kitchen and living area, while the kitchen window was enlarged to maximize natural light.

The apartment’s entrance was relocated to free up floor area in the living spaces and to provide a view of the exterior upon entering, rather than facing the interior. At the threshold, a bespoke furniture element was introduced, integrating the workspace with the entry unit.

Part of the storage room was incorporated into the kitchen to recess the cabinetry and extend the countertop surface. An additional wet area was introduced to accommodate a washer and dryer, enhancing the apartment’s functional capacity.

To bring light into the corridor, transom-topped doors were introduced to a bedroom and the bathroom, while a bookshelf lining the narrow passageway refined the proportions and enriched the spatial experience.

Pieces of white marble were placed where walls were removed, while microcement was applied in the corridor, wet areas, and storage room to ensure continuity with the rest of the apartment.

In the kitchen, birch plywood and white lacquered MDF were used for the carpentry, while a Dionysos marble countertop was selected to harmonize with the existing white mosaic floor.

In the bathroom, white-toned tiles were applied to the walls and countertop to enhance the perception of space, complemented by a large mirror that amplifies the overall sense of openness.
