Duplex Apartment Renovation in Sarrià, Barcelona

  • Categories Residential
  • Status Completed
  • Year 2021-2022
  • Location Barcelona, Spain
  • Area 130m2

Occupying the entrance level of a contemporary duplex apartment in Barcelona’s Sarrià district, this renovation adapts the home’s shared living spaces to the lifestyle of its new owners. Although the apartment already benefited from generous proportions, abundant natural light and a continuous terrace overlooking the main façade, its original layout no longer reflected the way the clients wished to inhabit the space.

The intervention reconfigures the existing layout around a new open-plan kitchen that brings together cooking, dining and living within a single, continuous environment. Rather than introducing new partitions, the project is structured around a linear architectural volume that integrates storage, kitchen cabinetry and service functions, discreetly concealing the guest bathroom while organising the entrance sequence and defining a clear transition between the arrival area and the living spaces.

At the centre of the composition, a large island becomes the focal point of everyday life. More than a workspace, it establishes a natural connection between the kitchen, dining room and living area, encouraging social interaction while preserving uninterrupted views across the apartment and towards the terrace. The continuous oak volume consolidates storage and service functions into a single architectural element, while the central island naturally becomes a place for cooking, dining and gathering. The new white steel balustrades, together with the upper-level library repainted in white, contribute to the light and cohesive character of the double-height space.
