Apartment Refurbishment in Barceloneta

The project deals with the refurbishment of a 25m2 apartment on the 5th floor of a small corner building on Barceloneta peninsula, a famous district of Barcelona with Mediterranean charm and beauty.  It boasts exceptional views towards the sea and the beach.

The owners dreamed of a holiday home in Barcelona, so they decided to purchase this small apartment and refurbish it in order to spend their vacation in their beloved city, next to the sea. Having two teenage children, their only requirement was to be able to have a separate bedroom.

The project’s design sought to highlight the apartment’s main characteristic, its magnificent view towards the sea.

The typology of this corner apartment, with one window overlooking the sea and the other two overlooking a small street, allowed the development of the bathroom in the center, inside a “mirror” box, which delimits the two necessary spaces. To enjoy the view from the bedroom and the shower while maintaining privacy, the box´s side facing the living room was made of a one-way mirror, with the mirror side hence reflecting the sea in the living room.

To maintain unity across the two spaces, continuous blue wood paneling was adopted on the internal walls, also lining the entrance and WC doors, kitchen and bedroom storage. Above this wooden cover, a suspended soffit was created to run all electricity, water, air conditioning and ventilation installations, so that everything was completely integrated.

Parts of the traditional Catalan vaulted ceiling and brick wall were restored and left exposed in order to contrast with the new materials, such as the Macael marble and the solid oak flooring.
